- A post-graduation work permit generally cannot be extended or reissued.
- Plan from the date on the permit, working backwards, not from when you feel ready.
- A bridging open work permit only helps if a qualifying application is already in progress.
- Provincial nomination routes change, so check the position at the time rather than relying on what was true last year.
- Leaving the decision until the final month removes most of the options.
Why this one is different
Most permits can be extended. A post-graduation work permit generally cannot. It is issued once, for a period tied to the length of the study programme, and when it ends it ends. That single fact changes how the whole period should be planned.
The result is a group of people who did everything asked of them, studied in Canada, worked in Canada, and then discover that the timeline for permanent residence does not fit inside the permit they were given.
The planning has to run backwards from the expiry date. What has to be true, and by when, for a route to be open before that date arrives.
Bridging, and what it requires
A bridging open work permit allows certain applicants who already have a permanent residence application in progress to keep working while it is processed. It is genuinely useful and it is frequently misunderstood, because it is not a standalone option. It bridges an application that already exists.
That means the permanent residence application has to be filed and at the right stage before the work permit expires. Someone who waits until the last month, discovers bridging, and then starts assembling a permanent residence application has usually left it too late.
The eligibility conditions are specific and they change. Check the position as it stands when you are applying, not as it stood when a friend went through it two years ago.
Provincial and employer routes
Provincial nomination can be a route where federal thresholds are out of reach, and it is also the part of the system that changes most often. Ontario redesigned its nominee programme in June 2026, closing all of its previous streams and replacing them with a single employer led stream. Anything you read about that programme written before that date is now describing something that no longer exists.
Employer supported routes generally require the employer to act, which introduces a dependency on a third party with their own timelines. If an employer route is part of your plan, the conversation with the employer needs to happen months before it becomes urgent.
That volatility is exactly why this article does not list thresholds and quotas. They would be wrong within months.
If the date is close
Establish the exact expiry date and count. Then work out which routes could realistically be started and completed, or at least filed, before it.
If nothing can be filed in time, the question becomes whether a different temporary status is available, whether leaving and applying from outside is preferable, and what each option does to your longer term position. These are trade offs rather than a single right answer.
What you should not do is allow the date to pass while deciding. Once status lapses you are in restoration territory, with ninety days and a narrower set of options.
Can a post-graduation work permit be extended?
Generally no. It is issued once for a period tied to the study programme and cannot ordinarily be extended or reissued.
What is a bridging open work permit?
A permit allowing certain applicants with a permanent residence application already in progress to continue working while it is processed. It requires an existing application, so it cannot be used as a standalone fallback.
Is provincial nomination still an option in Ontario?
Ontario redesigned its nominee programme in June 2026, replacing its previous streams with a single employer led stream. Whether it fits your situation depends on the current requirements, which should be checked at the time.
What if my permit expires before anything is filed?
You would be out of status, with ninety days to apply for restoration under section 182. The options at that point are narrower, which is why the planning should start well before the date.
