Study Permits and the Post-Graduation Work Permit

Key points

  • Study permits carry conditions, and breaching them affects future applications.
  • The post-graduation work permit depends on the institution and programme chosen, decided at enrolment.
  • Eligibility rules for both study permits and post-graduation permits have changed and continue to change.
  • The permit is tied to actively pursuing studies, not merely to being enrolled.

What a study permit requires

An applicant generally needs acceptance at a designated learning institution, proof of sufficient funds for tuition and living costs, and the ability to satisfy an officer that they will leave at the end of the authorised stay.

Additional requirements have been introduced over time, including provincial or territorial attestation for many applicants, and financial thresholds have been revised. Anyone applying should confirm the current requirements rather than rely on what applied to someone who applied earlier.

The conditions attached

A study permit is not simply permission to be in Canada. Conditions include actively pursuing studies, making progress toward completing the programme, and remaining enrolled at a designated institution.

Institutions report on enrolment. A student who stops attending, drops below the required load, or takes an unauthorised leave can be found non-compliant, and that finding follows them into future applications.

Changing institution or level of study has its own notification or application requirements depending on the circumstances.

Working while studying

Eligible students may work on and off campus subject to conditions, including limits on hours during academic sessions. Those limits have been changed more than once in recent years.

Working beyond what is authorised is a breach with consequences disproportionate to the money earned. Students should verify current limits directly rather than relying on what a friend did.

Co-op and internship placements that form a required part of a programme generally need a separate co-op work permit.

The post-graduation work permit

The post-graduation work permit is an open work permit available to graduates of eligible programmes, with duration linked to the length of the programme completed, up to a maximum.

It is the main bridge between studying in Canada and qualifying for permanent residence, because it produces the Canadian work experience that several programmes reward.

Eligibility depends on the institution and programme. Not every designated learning institution produces an eligible programme, and the criteria, including field-of-study requirements for certain graduates, have been narrowed.

The critical practical point: this is determined by choices made at enrolment, years before the application. A student who chooses a programme without checking eligibility may find at graduation that no permit is available, and there is no way to fix it retrospectively.

Applying at the right time

There is a window after receiving final confirmation of programme completion in which the application must be made, and the applicant must hold valid status or apply to restore it.

It is generally available once in a lifetime. A graduate who obtains one for a short programme and later completes a longer one usually cannot obtain a second.

That makes the sequencing of studies a decision with long-term consequences, which is worth thinking about before the first enrolment rather than after the last.

The wider picture

Study permit and post-graduation permit rules have been amended repeatedly, including caps on applications, attestation requirements, financial thresholds, and restrictions on eligibility for spouses of students.

Anyone planning a multi-year path from study to permanent residence should treat the current rules as a snapshot and build in the possibility of change, rather than assuming today’s pathway will exist unchanged in three years.

Common questions

Can I work full time during a scheduled break?

Full-time work during scheduled breaks has generally been permitted for eligible students, subject to current conditions and to holding valid status.

Does an online programme qualify for a post-graduation permit?

Distance-learning components have been treated differently at different times. This should be confirmed against current policy before enrolling.

Can I change schools?

Yes, with the required notification or application depending on the circumstances. It can affect post-graduation permit eligibility.

What if I fail a semester?

A single setback is not necessarily fatal, but the obligation is to actively pursue studies and make progress. Extended interruptions create compliance risk.
